Roughly one thousand illegal motorbike racers were arrested and more than a thousand modified motorbikes were seized in a crackdown by the Region 2 Police this month. Chonburi had the most arrests and seizures of a total of eight different provinces.

The Region 2 Police Deputy Commander Lieutenant General Surajit Chingnawan told TPN media, “We have arrested 1,108 motorbike racers and seized 1,802 motorbikes from eight provinces which are Chanthaburi, Chachoengsao, Chonburi, Trat, Nakhon Nayok, Prachinburi, Rayong and Sakaeo. We had the most arrests and seizures from Chonburi.”

“Parents have to take care of their children as most motorbike racers are still minors and teenagers. We are using the Family Act to take action against parents who allow their children to drive without a license and don’t pay attention to their children’s whereabouts or actions.” Surajit explained.

The current crackdown was originally ordered from a national level, notes TPN media, and follows many complaints after a Covid-19 related curfew was lifted earlier this year. The overnight curfew was in place to stop gatherings and parties that could potentially spread Covid-19, noted authorities, but it also helped stop motorbike racing which returned with a vengeance once the curfew was lifted.
