Eleven people have sustained injuries and twelve vehicles were damaged after a female driver crashed her pickup truck into a railway barrier gate in the Mueang Chonburi district last night (September 9ばんざい).
The Don Hualor Police were notified of the accident at 10:30 P.M. on the Suk Prayoon – Samnak Bok Road in Don Hualor.
Emergency responders arrived at the scene to find eleven people who had sustained mostly minor injuries (6 men, 5 women). They were taken to a local hospital for evaluation and medical assistance.
A total of twelve vehicles that had been waiting in front of the railway track which was a collection of motorbikes, food carts, and cars, also suffered damage.
The pickup truck driver, Ms. Dussanee Penkaew, 23, who reportedly caused the accident, was detained by law enforcement at the scene. She was not injured.
Mr. Kamthorn Jitsang, 40, a railway employee, told reporters, “The railway barrier gate had already blocked the road with signals to warn that a train was coming.”
“Many vehicles had stopped in a line waiting for a train that had been approaching. However, Ms. Dussanee was coming from the opposite way in her pickup truck and slammed into the railway barrier gate at high speed, careening out of control into the opposite lane and the row of vehicles and drivers waiting for the train. She did not appear to see the railway barrier despite multiple flashing lights and warnings.” Kamthorn stated.
Dussanee was taken to the Don Hualor Police Station for further legal action. She did not release a statement immediately at the scene of the accident as to the cause. TPN media notes this was also during a mandatory 9:00 P.M. to 4:00 A.M. curfew in Chonburi. It was unclear why so many vehicles and people were still out during the curfew period or if they had permits to do so.
