A Burmese manual worker, 48, was found infected with Covid-19 coronavirus while reportedly living and working at the Umpiem temporary shelter in the Phop Phra district of Tak province, considered the latest locally-transmitted case in Thailand.

Dr. Opas Karnkawinpong, the Director-General of the Department of Disease Control, made an announcement today, November 22, that the infected was initially having a high fever and suspicious symptoms associated with the deadly virus. He was sent to Mae Sot Hospital before carrying out the Covid-19 test via the RT-PCR method.

His results revealed on Friday, November 20, that he tested positive for the virus. He is reportedly being isolated in the hospital and waiting for the second test while his colleagues and others who were in close contact are being state quarantined. All of them tested negative for the virus so far, according to the Director-General.

Further details on the number of high-risk people and other information will be announced later by medical officers from Tak’s disease control department. Dr. Opas warned the public not to panic and stay protected at all times.

Meanwhile, the government and the military of Phop Phra district have stricken health and border measures around the Umpiem shelter, also known as a refugee camp, to monitor and investigate the original location of where the virus came from. The shelter is essentially locked down and nobody is allowed to leave the camp currently for any reason.

The initial investigation exposed that the patient was an illegal immigrant who had reportedly smuggled from the Thailand-Burma border along the Phop Phra district before living at the shelter and suffering from an abnormally high fever.

The territorial volunteer troop is deployed to patrol every potential border entrance.  A temporary lockdown in the area is also implemented to strictly prohibit outsiders from potentially spreading or infecting from the Covid-19 disease.
